Canine Melanoma Vaccine Gets Full Approval
Duluth, Georgia

The first and only USDA-approved therapeutic vaccine for treatment of cancer in dogs has been announced.

Merial has received full license approval from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) for it's ONCEPT™ Canine Melanoma Vaccine. ONCEPT™ is descibed by Merial as a "breakthrough vaccine indicated in aiding in extending survival of dogs with stage II or stage III oral canine melanoma".

Oral canine melanoma is a common yet deadly form of cancer. Dogs with stage II or stage III malignant melanoma typically survive for less than 5 or 6 months after diagnosis when treated with surgery along. When also treated with ONCEPT™, dogs survived for so long that 50% of dogs in the study were either still alive when the study was concluded, or died of other causes. Oral melanoma, which can be seen in any breed, is the most common malignant tumor of the dog's mouth, and can also be seen in the nail and footpad. This type of cancer is extremely aggressive and frequently spreads throughout the body. To date, the most common form of treatment has been radiation and surgery.

"Canine melanoma spreads readily, and, unfortunately, existing treatments have not succeeded in controlling the disease," said Dr. Bob Menardi, a veterinarian and spokesperson for Merial. "ONCEPT™ is a new adjunct treatment option for dogs that have been diagnosed with this often fatal disease."

The USDA issued a conditional U.S. Veterinary Biological Product License for ONCEPT™ in 2007. During the period of conditional licensure, ONCEPT™ was available to veterinary oncologists as Merial conducted additional research to further support the safety and efficacy of the vaccine. The results of that research led to the full licensure of ONCEPT™. The vaccine will be administered via a Canine Transdermal Device, which delivers the vaccine without the use of a needle.

"The Canine Transdermal Device makes administration of the vaccine easy and quick for oncologists and their patients, leaving one less worry for dog owners dealing with their pet's cancer treatment" said Dr. Richard Stout, executive vice president and chief medical officer of Bioject. "We are proud to work with Merial in bringing this breakthrough product to market."

Walk in baths are not just for humans. They eliminate the backbreaking work of washing a larger dog.  Carla, at Narre Warren Dog Grooming, has a walk in bath because she grooms most dog breeds. There is no way she would attempt to lift a full size dog like a Maremma, on her own, without risking an injury. In fact most full sized Maremma's are a two person job, to groom. :-).  With a well designed, walk in bath, Carla, just leads a dog in, she can turn it around in the bath and lead it out again, with ease.  It is easier for the dog too and most enjoy their bath and groom.

To view a range of walk in baths and other mobility products  look at the range at mobility compare , this gives a lot of information to allow you to compare styles and price.

Walk in baths have taken off in a big way, in the dog grooming industry.

Balina Beach
I am having another great day beside the pool here at Phillip Island. We had my favorite, chicken for lunch. We are heading to the off leash beach at 5pm today so  I can run in the sand with mum.

Check out my dog walks and pet friendly caravan parks section of this web site.

Planning ahead anf thinking about Balina Beach Villiage, one of the places I will be staying once we leave Victoria.

It’s stressful finding holiday accommodation that accepts four-legged friends. It’s much more relaxing to bring your dog, cat or budgerigar with you.
Ballina Beach Village is a pet friendly destination. More than friendly, it positively welcomes your pets to its sites and cabins. There’s space enough for you and your pet to have a real holiday. Contact Ballina Beach Village on 026686 3347 to find out more. Travel safe.

I have had a lovely day.

First, I woke dad up early and asked for a walk. It was a new location; I have never stayed at Phillip Island before so I wanted to look around.  It suited mum, she blogged in bed with a cup of tea while I showed dad the local sights.

Then I reclined in the shade while mum and dad swam where I could keep an eye out that they were behaving themselves.

Picture
Then (what joy), we went on a long walk into Cowes I took a look around a Sunday market then I sat outside boutiques with dad while mum looked at ladies things in the store, I made sure she knew how pleased I was each time she came back.

Picture
Then we came to a restaurant with outside table and chairs and mum went and asked if I was allowed, to sit there with them if the ordered and they said yes.
Imagine my delight when mum comes back with my favourite dinner. Roast chicken cut into quarters eaten finger style and I was allowed, to eat all mum’s chicken skin and some of the chicken meat because she is watching her fat intake and portion control.

Picture
Mum said that one large hot roast chicken for $7.90 was excellent value. The store was very busy and there were lots of sidewalk, table and chairs, and no one was worried about a poodle being one of the diners.  Mind you, I am better groomed right now than my owners.

I want to eat more of the chicken skin than mum will allow me to eat. She said she would have to get a life insurance online quote, For me if I do not cut back on the chicken skin, like she has done.

We had another long walk after that; mum said we had to walk our chicken off.

Then home to relax beside the pool and train mum again.

I am snuggled up on the bed dictating my blog to mum now, it has been a perfect doggie day.

Dog friendly by arrangement with management during off season.

We chose Seaview Holiday Park at Phillip Island, as an overnight stop over, so we could enjoy the solar heated pool.
Our caravan was parked beside the pool, in an awkward to back into site.

The park appears to specialize in cabins and permanent on site vans. It was quiet the day we arrived. Very pleasant.

No seniors or club membership discounts a flat $30. a night and no bond for the dog.

I have a medium strength internet connection, using a one meter long internet antenna and Telstra Mobile connection. TV reception is fair.

Scottish Terrier Wins Westminster Dog Show
New York City, New York

A Scottish Terrier named Sadie has beaten over 2,500 dogs to the coveted 'Best in Show' award at the 2010 Westminster dog show.

Another sold-out crowd at Madison Square Gardens has watched more than 2,500 dogs and 3 new breeds compete for honors in one of the world's most prestigious dog shows. At 11 p.m. last night Sadie, a Scottish Terrier from Eagle, Idaho became the 8th Scottie to win 'Best in Show'. Sadie, also known as Ch Roundtown Mercedes of Maryscot, was also in the final last year and this win is her 112th Best in Show award. The other group winners competing in the final were a Puli, a Whippet, a white Toy Poodle, a French bulldog, a Brittany Spaniel and a Doberman Pinscher.

The Westminster Kennel Club's Annual All Breed Dog Show is probably second only to the United Kingdom's Crufts show as a measure of canine success. Last year's show was celebrated by senior citizens everywhere, with the 10-year-old Sussex Spaniel called Stump winning 'Best in Show' - that's 2 years older than the previous oldest winner. What was even more remarkable was that Stump had retired 2 years earlier after winning the Sporting group but failing to win 'Best in Show'. In 2008, the show was won for the first time ever by a Beagle named Uno.

This year's show welcomed 3 new breeds to the 170 breeds of last year: The Irish Red and White Setter, the Norwegian Buhund and the Pyrenean Shepherd. Despite its name, the Irish Red and White Setter is a distinct breed, not just a different colored version of the Irish Setter, and has been known in Ireland since the 17th century. The history of the Norwegian Buhund extends back to the Vikings, and is used for herding livestock, guarding and hunting. The Pyrenean Shepherd is a herding breed that is important in farming communities in the High Pyrenees mountains in France.

Between 25 and 40 percent of dogs are considered obese or are likely to become obese. It is the most common nutrition-related health condition in dogs in our society.

The primary causes of obesity are overeating and lack of exercise.

Recent research shows that brands of dog food are not consistent, in calorie value and few dogs actually lose weight on
dog foods sold for weight control.

 Doesn’t that sound familiar?

Not unlike the situation (
weight loss product)for their owners.

The experts tell us it is all about portion control, cutting out the snacks and getting enough exercise, for overweight dogs to lose weight them maintain correct weight.  No different than the best advice for us human owners J

1 large Mission olive tree – Value $40.00

This variety resulting from the olive farming practiced by 21 missions, spread from San Diego to Sonoma and is appropriately named “The Mission”. The majority of Mission olives are grown and picked for consumption rather than oil production. It’s a medium sized oval fruit whose skin is deep purple that dramatically changes to jet black when ripe. ( value $40)

Olives are a part of the highly recommended Mediterranean diet for humans. Olives are also a part of the not so healthy fatty take away food culture and then there is the diet industry culture , does nutrisystem work, which thankfully dogs don’t get so involved with, they are usually content with the same healthy meals eaten to  a regular schedule and a walk and play to maintain their fitness.I had an apricot tree once and I did not pick up the fallen fruit. If fermented, my poodle ate it, got drunk. Indeed, she was a nasty snarly drunk, poor dog. I now pick up all fallen fruit off the ground.

Help Chained Dogs This Valentine's Day
Washington, D.C.

The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) has called for dog lovers to support the Dogs Deserve Better group in it's efforts to end the practice of perpetually chaining dogs.

This Valentine's Day, Dogs Deserve Better will be sending Valentine's Day cards and dog treat coupons to the owners of chained dogs across the country during it's "Have a Heart for Chained Dogs" week. The gift is accompanied by a brochure for the dog's owner, explaining why the practice is a form of abuse and encouraging them to bring their dog indoors or to re-home the animal. This year the group hopes to send 15,000 such packages.

The HSUS points out that because dogs are social animals they need regular interaction with their family, and that chained dogs will experience boredom, loneliness, and isolation, which will eventually lead to territorial and aggressive behavior. This is illustrated by the fact that almost 300 children were killed or seriously injured by chained dogs in 2003, with a recent high-profile case being that of 2 year-old Matthew Clayton Hurt who was killed in Arkansas in October 2009 by a chained dog protecting her puppies. California, Maryland and Nevada have all passed laws that limit the tethering of dogs, with Pennsylvania, Hawaii, Maine, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Texas and Washington currently working on laws that will limit this activity.

The charity wants dog owners across the country to take action to help end the practice by assisting the Dogs Deserve Better group in identifying chained dogs. If you know of a perpetually chained dog you can anonymously provide the dog's address to the group. Other ways members of the public can assist is in making Valentine's Day cars, donating pet treat coupons and donating directly.
