There has been another incident of Hendra virus in north Queensland on a rural property in the Townsville region and Biosecurity Queensland is investigating. The last Hendra case in Townsville was in December 2004. Queensland's Chief Health Officer Dr Jeannette Young says staff will travel to the site to determine if any people were exposed to the infected horse that died last week.
She says the department is ready to provide any testing or treatment if required.
This is the first incident of Hendra virus, this year. last year was the worst with more than 20 horses and one dog being affected or put down due to the virus which appears to be spread though bat droppings. So far the outbreaks have mostly been across Queensland as well as northern New South Wales.
