Dogs have puberty problems, too. 01/13/2010
Most people think of acne as a problem only suffered by teenage, humans, but certain breeds of dog are also prone to this unfortunate condition during their teen years. The most susceptible breeds are Boxers, Bulldogs, Doberman pinschers, Great Danes and Rottweilers. The condition starts at puberty, which is around six months of age for a dog. Most dogs outgrow the acne by the time they become a young adult, at around one year of age. However, for some dogs the condition can become chronic. Dogs with canine acne develop multiple blackheads, on their chin, lips, and muzzle. Plugs of debris made of natural substances such as keratin and sebum block the hair follicles, causing local swelling, which can rupture to form scabs. This is not a big problem unless a secondary bacterial skin infection develops. This can cause pain and itching, leading the dog to scratch at his/her face or rub it on the ground, risking more irritation and infection Regular cleaning with best acne treatments, will be required to decrease the bacterial load of the skin and remove cellular debris which could contribute to blocking the pores. Sometimes antibiotics are prescribed or an anti-inflammatory drug to alleviate the discomfort. If your dog, is not one of the known, susceptible to this condition, dog breeds and it has developed a skin irritation with bald patches, it is best to have it checked out by a vet quickly, to make sure your dog does not have ringworm or mange, as these are both highly contagious and require early treatment to halt the spread.
