The temperament of the Golden Retriever is described, in the Kennel Club, standard for the breed, as "kindly, friendly and confident". Golden retrievers are the fourth most popular dog chosen for families, in the world.

While it is sometimes said golden retrievers are too friendly to make good watchdogs, this is one dog that I trust enough to share my best friend, human dad and even my most loved, old, ball.

Having once been bitten by a bull terrier and heard stories about how the previous poodle my mum and dad owned was bitten by a dingo,  I think you need life insurance before you go close to some dog breeds.

If I was to think of synonyms for the word ‘trust’, it would be, J, my best doggie friend,  ‘Kelly’ or ‘Golden retriever’.

Golden retrievers are wonderful family dogs. I had a golden retriever pup . before i had my children . We called this pup Shandy ... He welcomed my 3 kids when i had them . He lived till 14 ........... it broke my heart and my kids when i had to get him put down ......... his back legs went, he had injections but did no good . I was with him when the vet put him to sleep ( the look in his eyes said thanks )the right thing to do i know

Anthea, :-) Fourteen years was a good life for a larger size dog. It is a shame they do not live as long as thier owners but I suppose if they did the partings would be even harder. We had a poodle, a beautiful girl, we called, 'Bo', she lived until 19 years and that made having to do much the sames as you describe, saying goodbye, what seemed far too early, to our last boy poodle, at 11 years, because he was in pain, even harder, it seemed far too soon, far too young.
It is the kindest thing to do even though it is so hard. You did Shandy a loving favour saying goodbye when you did and not letting him suffer. No amount of money can fix these chronic conditions once they set in and it's good to be able to know when 'it's time'. :-).
