I took my folk for a walk this morning, it is a two kilometre return walk for us to get to our mail box and I love the walk.  Today our first Christmas card arrived and made me think about Christmas and what I will be getting.  I am booked in for a groom on Friday so I can wag my tail with pride and do some show off pictures next week.  In the meanwhile I found this dog on Flicka, who can pose for my morning blog post as I am having a bad hair day.

I am not much good at sending Christmas cards but I thought I could share this doggy area freshening tip with you as ‘my card’.

DEODORISING.

As I go for a walk morning and evening I do not foul up my own yard, I have that for odour free snoozing and the garden is scented with roses, lavender, lilies ad herbs so we have no dog odour problems.
Some dogs have no choice but to use the yard for a toilet.  If you are planning pre-Christmas parties and want to deodorise paths or other doggy do smelling areas, try cleaning, then rinseing them with vinegar and water. You don’t need much vinegar.

KEEPING A PET AWAY FROM AN AREA IN THE GARDEN.

If there is an area where you want to train us dogs not to go, place orange peel there and give us a soft sandy spot that has water, part shade, part sun where we have some toys and are allowed to bury them and can lay in our soft spot and sunbake of lay in the shade to our hears content and we will leave your citrus clean smelling area alone and you just pick up the citrus peel when you are wanting to entertain in your own spot and leave us dogs to ours.

To his dog, every man is Napoleon;
hence the constant popularity of dogs.
~ Aldous Huxley

Indigo certainly agrees with that, in fact every dog I ever bought gravitated to my husband Reg and thought he was not only the pack leader, but deserved award plaques stating he was the greatest.

Dogs are very good for your ego.

Indigo is sitting here in an armchair keeping me company while I work late at night.

I share the honour of being equal pack leader in her eyes, with Reg.

So often, I see people playing with a dog, for their benefit not the dog's.  Yes the dog is enjoying the attention for a while, then it begins to give signals that it has had enough and the play is too rough or tiring.  Most owners read the cues and stop and these are the owners who share a wonderful communication and companionship bond, with the dog.

It is more often the non dog owning visitor or a child inexperienced with dogs, who does not notice the tail going down, the dog backing away, looking unhappy and wants to keep handling the animal.  I often have too step in and say, 'Indigo is saying she has "Had enough play"' .   As I am there with Indigo, when she is in the company of others who do not understand, doggie talk, it has never developed to the growling stage, but I totally relate to these comments below, by Irith Bloom, Owner,

Never Punish a Dog For Growling.
Dogs communicate in many ways that are too subtle for the average human to notice. Yawning, lip licking, and looking away are a few signals of anxiety or discomfort. Unfortunately, we don't always respond appropriately to subtle signals, so dogs sometimes find themselves having to escalate to a growl.

Growling is a clear message that a situation is uncomfortable. It's also an indication that a bite could happen if things don't change. Consider it fair warning. You can train your dog to react better to the situation eventually, but for now, say thank you and stop whatever it is that made the dog growl. Punishing growling suppresses the growling, not the anxiety, and eliminates a useful warning signal. So don't punish growling.

101 Dog Tricks Step-by-step Activities to Engage, Challenge, and Bond with Your Dog

By Kyra Sundance

"101 Dog Tricks" is the largest trick book on the market and the only book with a full-colour photo of every trick presented, and colour photos of each step in the process. This is not a study guide or a training philosophy book; the step-by-step approach, tips, trouble-shooting boxes and difficulty ratings allow readers to start trick training in five minutes. Some training books require special tools (such as clicker training) or an understanding of dog psychology, but "101 Dog Tricks" simply spells out the actions to take. Trick training is a must for all dog owners who consider their dogs part of the family. A dog that learns tricks is better trained and better behaved overall because basic commands are understood and the human/pet communication is in place.

From The Publisher:

Featuring step-by-step photos of every trick in the book "101 Dog Tricks" is the largest trick book on the market and the only one presenting full-color photos of each trick and its training steps.? Tips, and trouble-shooting boxes cover common problems, while "build-on" ideas suggest more complicated tricks which build on each new skill. Puppies chewing the wrong thing, can cause a problem for owners, it is almost a rite of passage into adulthood for some dogs, though there are things we can do to try to minimize, if not, avoid the problem.  Our indigo has had toys to play with and been given walks since she was very young and has never caused any damage. One of our favorite pets in the past, a black poodle, Bo, chewed up an expensive leather belt while we were out one day and also ate the chocolate Christmas gifts and chocolate is harmful for dogs. I learned from those events and I have left indigo with a chewable gift, like a pig’s ear, and I have given her a walk, before I leave her alone for a few hours.

Question:

I have a 6-month-old puppy that chews on our wood furniture and just does not seem to stop no matter how many toys I give her. I took her to work because I thought she was doing it out of boredom and she even chewed on the office furniture, while I was there with her.

I really want to get her a companion to play with while I am at work, and hopefully that will stop her from chewing everything to pieces since she will have a buddy. Can anyone recommend a breed that is not notorious for chewing everything in sight? Thank you

Answer:

If you look at the dog, you get some idea, if it is likely to be an active dog or a potential chewer. You can pick the active dogs by their long legs or streamline bodies, more solidly built dogs and dogs with short legs, are usually the more placid breeds.  Then look at the dog’s muzzle,  if it is like that of the original dogs, the wolves, with a strong bite, these dogs are more likely to need to chew, that a breed with a shortened snout like a Pekingese or a Pug.

All puppies are chewers. Those large leg marrowbones, cut into three by the butcher, or a chicken wing, for a smaller dog, are a great chewing item.

A walk in the morning before you have to leave for walk, so the puppy is tired and happier to nap while you are out, then a walk again when you get home, the puppy will look forward to, lol, J, maybe learn to reserve some energy for, in advance.

Puppies need training, ask for advice at your local veterinary surgery, they often hold, ‘puppy schools’, to help teach owners as much as the puppy, how to train and prevent behavior problems.
