2010's Most Unusual Dog Names
Brea, California

The nation's oldest and largest provider of pet insurance has revealed the most unusual dog names given to pets of policy holders.

For the third year in a row, employees of VPI (Veterinary Pet Insurance), were asked to select 50 unusual dog names from the company's database of more than 485,000 insured pets and voted for 10 of their favorites.

"One of our favorite parts of putting these lists together is talking to the pets' owners and finding out how they came up with such imaginative names," said Curtis Steinhoff, director of corporate communications for VPI. "Strangely enough, a lot of them tell us they ruled out names they'd be too embarrassed to shout in public when calling their pets back to them. When you think about the names these owners finally decided on - like 'Lord Chubby Pruneface' and 'Optimus Pants', - it really makes you wonder what didn't make their cut."

VPI's final list of the most unusual dog names are as follows:

  • Pickle Von Corndog
  • Lord Chubby Pruneface
  • Badonkadonk
  • Ninjastar Dangerrock
  • Molly Mcboozehound
  • Dog Vader
  • Flopsy Squeakerton
  • Bettie Poops
  • Geez Louise
  • Barnaby Bones

"Pickle Von Corndog", a 1-year-old mixed breed, was named because he looked like a pickle, according to his owners Jason and Siobhan Engdahl. "We like to pickle and brew things in our home," Jason says. The addition of "Von Corndog" came a few days later when the Engdahl's decided that name was a good one as well but that they didn't want to wait to add another dog to their home before using it.

Top 10 Puppy Accidents Revealed
Brea, California

The nation's largest pet insurer has revealed the top ten accidental injuries suffered by dogs during the first two years of their lives.

Veterinary Pet Insurance (VPI), the nation's oldest and largest provider of pet health insurance, recently analyzed data from more than 480,000 insured pets to reveal that the top 10 puppy accidents cost VPI policy holders a combined $1.5 million in the past year, with the most common accidents being soft tissue trauma, lacerations or bite wounds, and cruciate ligament injury.

'Pet owners falsely assume that they don't need pet insurance because their pet is young and healthy. While younger pets are less susceptible to serious illnesses such as cancer, our data shows that pets of all ages can suffer costly accidental injuries. Pet insurance is designed to defray unexpected treatment costs - whenever they may occur. It's important for owners of puppies and kittens to keep in mind that just because their pets may be young, they're not indestructible,' said Dr. Carol McConnell, vice president and chief veterinary medical officer for VPI.

Top 10 Puppy Accident Claims:

  • Soft Tissue Trauma
  • Laceration or Bite Wound
  • Cruciate Ligament Injury
  • Sprain
  • Insect Bites and Stings
  • Abrasion
  • Torn Nail
  • Eye Trauma
  • Drug Toxicity
  • Oral Cavity Trauma

VPI recommend that to avoid such accidents, owners of young dogs 'baby-proof' their homes. For example, you should clear obstacles both inside and out of the home to prevent collisions during playtime, remove items that could be mistaken for food and keep medications tightly sealed and secured.

2009's Most Popular & Wackiest Dog Names Revealed
Brea, California

The nation's oldest and largest provider of pet health insurance has revealed that Max is no longer the most popular dog name among it's customers.

After 6 years at the top, Max has been knocked off the top spot in the 2009 list and Bella has become the most popular name for dogs. Veterinary Pet Insurance (VPI) analyzed the names of the pets of more than 475,000 customers to come up with a list of the most popular. There were approximately 400 more dogs named Bella than named Max in 2009. Despite the demise of Max as the top name, the same names were featured in the top-10 lists for both 2008 and 2009. In descending order, the top 10 dog names in the United States in 2009 were Bella, Max, Bailey, Lucy, Molly, Buddy, Maggie, Daisy, Chloe and Sophie.

"I was shocked to see Max bumped from number one!" said Curtis Steinhoff, senior director of corporate communications for VPI. "Max has been the most popular dog name for so long, I didn't think anything would take him down. I can only wonder if Max's dethroning has something to do with Bella being the name of the heroine in a certain vampire book/film series that's pretty popular these days."

The company also wanted to find out the most unusual dog names in the company's database. VPI employees selected 50 unusual dog names and voted for the 10 most unusual. They voted "Doogie Schnauzer Md" as the most unusual, followed by (in descending order): "Sargent Sausage", "I Am Sparticus", "Lunchbox", "Angus Sir Loin", "Bam-Bam Noodle Butt", "Mouse Meat", "Fluffernutter", "Kanye East" and "Inspector Foo Foo".

When you bring a puppy into the home, you need to immediately make a start on its education.

Dog’s are pack animals, a young dog needs to know that you the owner, is the pack leader and can control their behavior, this gives them a feeling of security. A trained dog is a happy dog.

Meet Roxy, the cute puppy at Clipper World. Even at a young age, she is responding to commands to ‘come’. As a result she is able to be in the store front, as seen here, keeping the children of customers entertained while they shop. Everyone benefits from an education, including us dogs, and we like to know we can fulfil a useful role in life.

The first lesson to teach your puppy is ‘House Manners’, most importantly, to ask when it needs to go to the toilet. Next in importance is to come on command, then to walk on a lead without lead pulling. Sit, impulse control, quiet on command, car manners, walking off a leash, stay and control of aggression are the next important social skills your dog wants to learn.

Getting your dog as well educated as myself, 'Indigo', means that your are able to to control antisocial behaviors like, ood stealing, jumping, inappropriate chewing, destructive behaviors, separation anxiety, running away, digging, nipping or play biting, soiling inside the house, and mounting.

New puppy owners do not instinctively know how to train a puppy and especially with larger dogs, training needs to begin early. There are books, web sites and even puppy schools run by local veterinary clinics where you can learn how to train your puppy while your puppy is learning to play and learn and become a happy educated dog.

As you can see from these pictures I am alert to the commands of my human pack leader and I love the game and rewards of, obeying; ‘sit’ and ‘come’, orders, on command.

Now as I plan to develop this doggies blog and web site and fill it with reference material to help other smart dogs like me and their owners, I think I need an education that goes way beyond your usual, ‘sit, stay, come’, commands. I am wondering if Poodles would be accepted into college and university. I do not see why not, we are one of the most intelligent dog breeds.

I could do my LSAT prep by correspondence while I tour the country on my dog friendly Caravan Park, walks and venues, tour.   There is a FREE 7 day trial.
Who knows, one day I might be educated enough to ghost write for my human mum instead of needing her to ghost write for me. lol

A happy, life starts with getting a good education.
