A Husky demonstrating a dog treadmill.
My mum is keen on fitness equipment, she once owned a treadmill, I never could understand why, I mean that is what dogs are for, I thought, to take you for walks.
Mum has now bought the Wii Fit Plus, as it can go with us when we travel, as the treadmill could not fit in the caravan.
I had a look tonight and showed her that there are treadmills made for dogs and smart dogs that can use treadmills designed for people.

Seeing I have photo evidence that dogs get to use home exercise equipment too, I have decided that next time mum is down on the floor, doing the plank or the superman, I am going to get down there off my chair, on to the floor with her, and play too. I am sure she will think that will be a great time for us to play ball.

A Romp In The Park, Makes Up For A Week Of Wii Neglect. by Kathy Shell.
Our cute Indigo, tolerated her human owners, playing on the Will Fit games all afternoon. I think she thinks if Reg keeps swinging imaginary golf clubs around in the lounge room near her chair, she will have to get ,
term life insurance online quotes

She is not at all happy with Reg and I playing on the Wii, I know she is used to any exercise she sees us doing, involving her and she felt apprehensive when Reg began swinging his arms around the small room, came to sit beside, mum for protection, ‘best place for her’-, out of his arm reach .

So yesterday, but after dinner, she let us know in her gentle way, that ‘ enough was enough’, she gave us both a gentle kiss to remind us, ‘she existed’’, then went and stood at the front door, looking back over her shoulder to us, then to the door, lol, J, talk about ‘a pointer’, dog.  She made sure ‘we got the point’, of what she was telling us.

We had a beautiful summer evening, out in the twilight, playing ball with her and I did some jogging, beside a lake, here at Mooroopna, in the Goulburn Valley.  Indigo rolled in the grass, chased ball and frolicked, got wet and muddy, chasing the ball too close to the water, and had the most wonderful time.

After the huge romp she had last night, Indigo, is far more relaxed about Reg playing his Wii Golf, today.

Weird things are happening in this house. I have come here to blog my complaints about mum.

Mum got up of the sofa yesterday evening and I got all excited expecting a sunset walk by the lake. She takes her  sandals off and I was sure she was going to put the joggers on so I am now at the front door, all excited, then she goes and stands on this funny rectangular low step, turns the TV on and picks up a white stick and starts boxing into the air at nothing.  Dad said something about, Wii boxing. Looked Wii weird to me and I sat in the arm chair, watching and giving her dirty looks for the next hour as she wiggled and jived and got up and down of the floor and never once invited me to play.

Then mum starts talking today about diamonds for me and I’m getting all excited,  knowing I deserve the best and fantasising again this time of wearing a multimillion dollar, diamond collar. Then what does she show me, but a picture of a diamond pattern in a dog coat she is thinking of getting me.  Hey Mum, it is ruddy 43 c. degrees outside today. First, I got my long walk cancelled because you bought yourself a new toy, the Wii and now you are talking sweaters in sweltering weather.

Surf dog Ricochet (Rip Curl Ricki's) inspirational journey from service dog training, to turning disappointment into a joyful new direction, to surfing with quadriplegic surfer, Patrick Ivison, to fundraising for charitable causes. ...

On Monday, my owner, Kathy, begins an eight week Extreme Measures, fitness and slimming coaching course at her gym and she will be putting fitness as the no one goal through until Christmas.

She has promised me a long walk over to the lake or along the Goulburn river every day between now and Christmas.  Now that's a promise I intend to hold her too.  You know how us dogs, soon learn the routine, we get to know the signs, the walking shoes going on, the time of day, we drop reminding looks at the door, give disappointed looks aimed to shame owners into action if the excited looks do not work.  Yes us dogs, earn our keep as fitness trainers :-).

Exercise and we will both benefit and enjoy it.

Dr. Robert Kushner, a human obesity expert and professor of medicine at Northwestern University's Feinberg School of Medicine, said that dogs make great workout partners in winning the battle of the bulge.

"They are natural exercise machines on a leash," he said.

Research has shown that it's easier to be physically active and stick with an exercise program when you team up with a workout buddy, Kushner said. But unlike human partners, who might make excuses for not wanting to go for a walk or run, a dog never will. They will generally be the first ones at the door, ready to go, rain or shine.

Deborah Wood, an animal shelter manager in Portland, Ore., lost 140 pounds in two years after enrolling in a national weight loss program and going for three-mile daily walks with her three papillons -- pushing the two oldest in a doggie stroller.

"I always liked walking my dogs," Wood said, "but I just made it a priority and worked on going farther and faster."

Finding the right walking speed to reap health benefits is easy, said Dr. Dawn Marcus, a professor in the anesthesiology department at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. "If you're so winded, you can't talk with someone, then you're probably walking at too hard of a pace," she said. "On the other hand, if you're walking so slowly that you can easily sing, you're probably not walking fast enough."

If your dog tends to saunter down the street, she said, you can intensify the workout by taking a hillier route or by stepping on and off curbs.

Marcus said that one of her most valued "colleagues" in the hospital is Wheatie, her wheaten terrier and a trained hospital therapy dog. "I've found that Wheatie motivates patients to open up, try new things and get healthier," she said.

But enthusiasm for exercise is just one of the healthy behaviours humans can learn from dogs, said Marcus, who last year wrote Fit as Fido: Follow Your Dog to Better Health. Dogs instinctively get enough sleep and maintain good hydration -- traits that have, for instance, been linked with weight loss in people.

"A lot of times as humans, we mistake that drive for water with a drive to get more food," Marcus said.

Currently, an estimated two out of three adults in the United States are overweight. And being overweight, Kushner stressed, has been associated with significant medical problems, including heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, cancer and stroke.

A few years ago, Kushner co-authored a study to see if pets and people could help each other lose weight. It compared the weight lost by 36 overweight people who were paired with an obese dog with the weight lost by 56 overweight people who participated alone.

Pets were fed a calorie-controlled diet. When their ideal body weight was reached, based on their breed and age, the animals were put on a maintenance diet. People participating in the study were given dietary counselling and encouraged to walk at least three times a week for 30 minutes.

Published in the journal Obesity, the study found that people with dogs were slightly more active than those without dogs and that, after a year, they had lost an average of 11 pounds, or 4.7 percent of their body weight.

Pudgy pooches benefited from the buddy system, too. They slimmed down an average of 12 pounds, or 15 percent of their body weight.

Kushner said that pets really do motivate people to stick with a diet and exercise plan until the pounds come off and stay off. People in the study reported that their dogs not only gave them incentive to work out but made the experience more enjoyable -- two predictors of sustaining an exercise program long term, he said.

For Wood, taking long treks with her dogs has paid off. She's now half the woman she used to be, dropping in dress size from a 3X to an 8.

"Walking a dog is absolutely fun," Wood said. "It's good for the dog; it's good for the human."
