Under Victorian Legislation the following breeds are identified as "restricted"; meaning they can't be bred or imported into the state.
Dangerous dog legislation is not the same as the restricted breed regulations. Any dog may be declared dangerous (from a small Chihuahua to a Great Dane). The dog's size or breed is not the issue; it is the dog's behaviour.
Staffordshire bull terrier. American-Staffordshire terrier. American Pitbull Terrier. Perro de Presa Canario Japanese Tosa or Fighting Tosa. Fila Brasileiro, or Brazilian fighting dog. Dogo Argentino or Argentinian fighting dog.
Pit bull and Staffordshire terrier are names designated to mixed-breed dogs that were created from breeding together the Bulldogs and terriers to create a superior fighting dog of great stamina and aggression. Until the 1930’s these dogs were used to fight bulls and bears until this became illegal. Since then there was an effort to breed some of the aggression out of some dogs and have them classed and breed as Staffordshire terriers while the Pit Bull terrier from the identical blood lines was frequently breed for illegal dog fighting and as such the aggressive instinct was desired and encourages in the breeding programs. There is little visual difference between these breeds, as even pit bull experts can't always tell them apart, but organizations such as the American Kennel Club (AKC) have distinguished minor differences.
History
Pit bull and Staffordshire are not official breeds, but slang terms used to the American Pit Bull Terrier and American Staffordshire Terrier. The American Pit Bull Terriers and American Staffordshire Terriers were the same breed until the 1930s, when the American Staffordshire Terrier was designated an official breed by the American Kennel Club. The AKC developed conformation standards, so dogs can only registered dogs can correctly be called Staffordshires.
A Staffordshire should be 18 to 19 inches in height for males and 17 to 18 for females, with a weight of 50 to 80 pounds. They may be stockier than American Pit Bull Terriers and will never have a red nose. As the Pit Bull is not bread to a registered breed standard, their appearance is more variable than a Staffordshire.
All dogs when provoked can bite. Although the Staffordshire can be a beautiful temperament dog, the danger is in the sheer power of the jaw. I have family who own and love dogs they consider are Staffordshires. They are just Pit Bulls to me and could easily kill another dog if given the opportunity. I know our Indigo is in favor on dogs with such powerful crushing jaws being on the restricted breeds list as one bit her and almost killed her. It was supposed to be a friendly Staffordshire.

One of my daughter's recently purchased a puppy and it seems to me the only vetting she was given by the breeder was if she had the high cost of the puppy. $4,000. is a lot to pay for a dog not suitable to be bred from but that apparently is the going price for a good looking Boston Terrier. I have to admit he is a good looking dog.
My other daughter is looking at purchasing a Golden retriever and the breeder she has applied to for a puppy has given her a huge questionnaire to fill in where she has to show she is a fit parent under the breeder's definition of that term. How many hours she will spend with the dog, the work hours, exercise and holidaying habits of the family are all part of the pre puppy ownership approval process.
I assume this approval of owners by good breeders is why there has been a big effort by some councils to outlaw puppy farms and pet shop animal sales where the motivation to sell is usually just a financial one with little consideration to see if the pet and the owner are suited for each other.
Maybe the dog owner rather than the dog is the one who needs to be licensed. The fact is if you do a web search of the news for dog stories there is a hideous amount of animal cruelty stories about so there does need to be some protection provided by society for these animals just as in my opinion there needs to be more safeguard to humans that they will not come face to face with dangerous breeds of domestic animals not properly restrained by the owners.
What regulations do we need?
Should regulation of animal sales be just a matter of common sense, health, ethics and prevention of animal cruelty or do we need a lot of 'just in case', regulations in place?
City of Lake Worth, Florida Proposes to Ban Pet Stores Lake Worth, FL The City of Lake Worth, Florida has introduced a city ordinance to ban the sale of dogs and cats in pet stores. The City of Lake Worth, Florida has introduced a city ordinance defining a pet store as a business selling dogs and cats, and then goes on to ban the sale of dogs and cats in pet stores. This proposal also establishes requirements for the sale of dogs and cats, although it bans such sale. The ordinance has been read before the City Commission and is set for a another reading and public hearing on Tuesday, February 15th. The planned ordinance states that “no pet store may display, sell, trade, deliver, barter, lease, rent, auction, give away, transfer, offer for sale or transfer, or otherwise dispose of dogs or cats in Lake Worth”. “Pet store” is defined as “any retail business open to the public that sells or transfers, or offers for sale or transfer, dogs and/or cats, including puppies and kittens, regardless of the age of the dog or cat.” Therefore, under this proposal, by definition, a pet store may not legally exist. Pet stores, even though they may not legally exist, would also be required to post and maintain, in a conspicuous place, on or within three feet of each animal’s kennel, cage or enclosure, a certificate of source of each dog or cat offered for sale or transfer. A copy of the certificate must also be provided to the purchaser or transferee of any dog or cat sold or transferred, even though the sale or transfer of a dog or cat is prohibited altogether under the ordinance! PIJAC strongly supports the right to keep pets, and the right of pet owners to have options as to where they obtain their companion animals based on the pet owner’s individual circumstances, needs and preferences. Pet stores provide healthy, responsibly raised pets to the public, and should serve as one of the options pet owners may turn to in choosing a companion animal, including a dog or cat. Discriminatory bans against the sale of animals by pet stores are poor public policy, and are harmful to pets and pet owners. Such bans do not benefit animals or the pet owning public. A ban targeting pet stores to protect animals is not rational. Pet stores are already more heavily regulated than any other source of pet animals. The City Commission will hold a public hearing on Tuesday, February 15, 2011 at 6:00 p.m. in the City Hall Commission Chamber which is located 7 North Dixie Highway, Lake Worth, FL. Australian Shepherd Wins AKC/Eukanuba National Championship Long Beach, California An Australian Shepherd has scooped $50,000 in prize money after winning Best in Show at the 2010 AKC/Eukanuba National Championship. The Australian Shepherd called CH Propwash Reckon, pet named "Reckon", won the Herding Group before winning the coveted Best in Show award at the Long Beach Convention Center on Sunday night. Judge Mrs. Jean Fournier selected Reckon from a strong field of Best in Group winners, including a German Wirehaired Pointer (Sporting), a Whippet (Hound), a Portuguese Water Dog (Working), a Smooth Fox Terrier (Terrier), a Pekingese (Toy), and a Bichon Frise (Non-Sporting). Reckon, from Kensington, New Hampshire, and owned by Leslie Frank and Judy Harrington, was judged Best in Show out of nearly 2,500 dogs of 167 different AKC-registered breeds. "We're pleased to award Reckon with The Eukanuba Celebration of Champions trophy, which features a likeness of all AKC/Eukanuba National Champions, plus a check for $50,000 and a year's supply of Eukanuba dog food," said Dan Rajczak, Senior Vice President, Global P&G Pet Care and Snacks. Of the 167 AKC-registered breeds that were entered to compete, the breeds with the largest number of representatives were the French Bulldogs, Samoyeds, Border Collies, Siberian Huskies, Australian Shepherds, Basset Hounds and Golden Retrievers, each with over 30 dogs taking part. The two-day event was held in conjunction with the AKC Agility Invitational and the AKC Obedience Invitational, the Junior Showmanship competition, and the Eukanuba World Challenge. Combined, these events hosted 3,233 competing dogs. "We are proud to have Reckon join the family of Best in Show winners at the AKC/Eukanuba National Championship. We had a record-breaking entry this year of highly competitive canine athletes in conformation, agility, obedience and the Eukanuba World Challenge. Congratulations to all the winners," said Show Chairman Ron Menaker. Photo courtesy American Kennel Club View the latest World Pet News every week at PetPeoplesPlace.com. Insurer Reveals Five Most Expensive Dog Breeds Seattle, Washington The most expensive dog breeds based on insurance claims have been released by the nation's fastest growing pet insurance company. The data, based on pet insurance claims submitted to Trupanion since August 12th 2000, reveals that the Rottweiler had the highest average claim amount, followed by the Bernese Mountain Dog, Great Dane, English Bulldog and French Bulldog, in descending order. The Rottweiler is prone to allergies, elbow dysplasia, gastric torsion, and hypothyroidism. Of the $532,261.93 spent on this breed, 63% was related to illnesses and 37% was attributed to accidents. This also makes the Rottweiler the breed most likely to cause an insurance claim as a result of an accident. The average amount claimed by Rottweiler owners was $567.53. The Bernese Mountain Dog is prone to cataracts, elbow dysplasia, gastric torsion, and mast cell tumors, and 76% of the $553,660.57 spent on members of this breed was related to illnesses. The average amount claimed by Bernese Mountain Dog owners was $412.85. The Great Dane often suffers from cardiomyopathy, elbow dysplasia, gastric torsion, and hip dysplasia, and 77% of the $462,204.97 spent on this breed was illness-related. The average claim made by Great Dane owners was $385.49. The English Bulldog is prone to cherry eye, brachycephalic syndrome, elongated soft palate, hip dysplasia, patellar luxation, and stenotic nares. Of the $1,152,947.32 spent on this breed, 84% was related to illnesses and 16% attributed to accidents. The average claim by English Bulldog owners was $370.57. And the least most expensive dog of the top 5 most expensive was the French Bulldog, with claims averaging at $355.63. The French Bulldog is prone to allergies, brachycephalic syndrome, hip dysplasia, and stenotic nares. 87% of the $384,325.78 spent on this breed was illness-related. Trupanion encourages all pet owners to insure their pet as early in life as possible, to increase to chances that all health issues will be covered by an insurance policy, since conditions that are present before enrolling in a policy will not be covered. "We encourage everyone to enroll their pets early to ensure that expensive veterinary costs are covered. Unfortunately many people enroll after their pet has become sick or injured, at which point it may be too late," says Howard Rubin, Chief Operating Officer at Trupanion. My daughter runs a dog grooming business and has worked with all breeds of dogs and has made the educated decision that from the entire dog breeds she knew that the Golden Retriever was the best she could choose as the family pet. decision , and I know she made the right choice for their family. Kelly has been a dream family member/pet.
Mind you, Kelly has brought about far more home changes than any other family member, requiring super efficient vacuum cleaners to be purchased, the laying of tiles through all the family areas of the home, lol, cream the same colour as her undercoat and basic black is not to be seen in the wardrobe of the family members.
Yes expect a few dog hairs, if you own a Golden Retriever and best to not be an EBay clothing seller if you do not want negative feedback saying, ‘garment had dog hairs on it’.
I will stick with our non hair shedding poodle, Indigo J, but I do love a Golden Retriever and agree you could not find a dog with a more gentle friendly personality for a family pet.
AKC Issues Warning Over "Marmaduke" Movie New York City, New York The American Kennel Club® (AKC) is concerned that the upcoming release of a film about a talking Great Dane may lead to moviegoers buying Great Danes without the appropriate research. The new Twentieth Century Fox movie "Marmaduke" follows the story of a loveable, but accident-prone, Great Dane whose family moves from a small town in Kansas to the big city of Los Angeles. The AKC says that while Great Danes have gentle and loving dispositions, puppies can be more clumsy and rambunctious and they need early obedience training because of their size and strength. The breed's most recent claim to fame comes from Giant George, a blue Great Dane from Arizona. Weighing in at 245 lbs. and measuring 7'3" from his nose to the end of his tail, The Guinness Book of World Records named Giant George the world's tallest dog ever. "The Great Dane Club of America hopes that anyone who sees this movie and becomes interested in having a Great Dane as a pet does their research to make sure it's the right breed for their lifestyle," said Dave Miller, President of the Great Dane Club of America. "Everything is bigger when you own a Great Dane. They eat a lot of food and take up a lot of space in your home and car. We recommend that families meet several full grown adult Great Danes to make sure they understand how large this breed really is." According to 2009 American Kennel Club registration statistics, the Great Dane is the 21st most popular breed in the United States. The breed was originally bred at least 400 years ago to hunt boar and it's name is the English translation of the French name "grand Danois". For those looking to add a Great Dane to their home, the AKC recommends that potential dog owners contact to obtain information about responsible breeders in their area.
