Red Dog in Top 10 Australian Films 11/19/2011
_ ‘Red Dog’ has been ranked as one of Australia's top 10 Films of all time. Kriv Stenders’ family film has proven a huge hit at the box office. Koko the dog takes its place alongside the iconic Mick Dundee and loveable pig Babe as the film Red Dog becomes Australia's tenth most popular film of all time. Raking in over $17 million at the box office, the independent film beat out long-standing favourite, Priscilla: Queen of the Desert, which previously held the number 10 spot with $16.45 million. "Priscilla is a favourite film of both the director and I so it is an honour to be in the same league," says producer Nelson Woss. "Making the top 10 Australian films of all time is a terrific result for the entire Red Dog team." The film follows the titular Red Dog as it inspires a remote Australian town in its epic search for its master. Directed by prolific Aussie filmmaker Kriv Stenders, the film has proven a hit with audiences and critics alike. Considering its budget (much smaller than many of the other big-budget productions on the list), it's a hugely impressive result and the production team see its position possibly improving. "We are one of only four independent films on the list," says Woss, "and there is still some life in ‘the dog' yet, so we may reach seventh or eighth place." The other films on the list of the ten highest grossing box officer earners include, in respective order, Crocodile Dundee, Australia, Babe, Happy Feet, Moulin Rouge, Crocodile Dundee 2, Strictly Ballroom, The Dish and The Man From Snowy River. Coral reefs will be gone by the end of the century, according to a top UN Scientist. In the recently published book 'Our Dying Planet', Professor Peter Sale writes that coral reef ecosystems are very likely to disappear by the end of this century, in what would be "a new first for mankind — the 'extinction' of an entire ecosystem". Our Dying Planet the Book. Format:Hardback, 360 pages Release Date: 12 September 2011Coral reefs are on track to become the first ecosystem actually eliminated from the planet. So says leading ecologist Peter F. Sale in this crash course on the state of the planet. Sale draws from his own extensive work on coral reefs, and from recent research by other ecologists, to explore the many ways we are changing the earth and to explain why it matters. Weaving into the narrative his own firsthand field experiences around the world, Sale brings ecology alive while giving a solid understanding of the science at work behind today's pressing environmental issues. He delves into topics including overfishing, deforestation, biodiversity loss, use of fossil fuels, population growth, and climate change while discussing the real consequences of our growing ecological footprint. Most important, this passionately written book emphasizes that a gloom-and-doom scenario is not inevitable, and as Sale explores alternative paths, he considers the ways in which science can help us realize a better future.
