Meet the Pet Whisperer. 01/25/2010
Rowena Walker, 29, Cairns, Qld owns Unit, an American Staffordshire terrier who is obsessed with ceiling fans. Rowena asks: We recently bought Unit. He loves being with us but when we allow him inside he is obsessed with the ceiling fans. He goes crazy and jumps up at them even when they are off. How can we stop this? The Pet Whisperer It's possible Unit had never seen a ceiling fan before he came to you. Dogs are very aware of their environment and are often fearful and anxious of things they have never seen before. Over time, he'll get used to the fans and realise that they are nothing to fear. Try not to react to Unit's behaviour as this can reinforce it Bring him inside on a lead and do some basic obedience - sit, drop, stay - with him, first in a room where there are no fans. Once he reliably obeys your commands you can try the exercises in the room with fans. Reward Unit with treats for obeying commands and remaining calm. If he jumps up and barks at the fan, tell him 'No!' and repeat obedience commands. He'll eventually learn to relax and ignore the fans Every fortnight, Kate Mornement helps with your pet behaviour problems. Just send your pet problem to: TL! Have you ever cleaned your home, arranged the cushions on the sofa, ;just so’, left the room the a few moments to return and find out that your dog has rearranged the cushions back how they were, the way she likes them, got your ‘snuggle’ added it to the top of the cushion pile, using the doggie principle of, ‘she who is the highest, is the boss’, then set herself up in the best location to benefit from the fan on a hot day, or the TV viewing for the evening? Why not share it? Web blogs are a great way for dog lovers to interact with each other and share stories about their fur babies. You are welcome to share snippets about your dog, through the comments section of Indigo’s blog or create your own dog blog through one of the free blogger accounts or a free web blog site like Webbly. A few minutes each day, posting doggy thoughts into a blog is fun. The great thing is, many others are doing the same thing, doggie blogs are very popular amongst readers and writers and I always have a laugh as my Indigo, has more international subscribed readers than I have Here are some tips ‘Blog-a-dog’ by Caroline Zambrano, Editor of Dog’s Life, Magazine, to help you blog and collect more Bones to make your best mate Dog of the Month! |
